A Show You’ve Got to Watch (or Why Wine is Good!)

Have you ever watched a series and can’t get it out of your mind?

Well I’ve got one for you.  And I’ll give you the cliff notes of the important information.

It’s on Netflix, is short (only 4 episodes) and is uplifting. It’s from Dan Buettner, a former Guiness World Record Champion who cycled and led expeditions all over the world.  He became really interested in the cultures and people he met and teamed up with National Geographic to study several hotspots that boasted unparalleled longevity and happiness.

Today’s American life expectancy is 78 years old, but he discovered 5 communities where the majority of people were living to well over 100 and called these ‘blue zones’  He learned that you could distill their success to lifestyle and environmental factors.  To learn more on the elements needed or how to get your own community involved, go HERE.

Definitely watch the series - but here are my take-aways:

Wine is ok!

Wine is ok! Read on!

The world’s longest living people:

  1. Move their Bodies: They move naturally by gardening or walking everywhere and staying active.

  2. Have a Purpose: They have a sense of purpose in their life, a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

  3. Have Daily Routines: They pray, rest and/or value fun and community time with others and these habits diminish stress.

  4. Eat without Overeating:  Most eat until they are 80% full and do not snack all day.  They definitely don’t habitually over-indulge.

  5. Eat Less Meat:  Many are vegetarians and the meat eaters don’t have it daily, nor have a lot of meat. All rely heavily on a diet of beans.

  6. Drink Well: They drink moderately and do so with friends and food, where gathering, community and laughter is center stage. They enjoy life while enjoying wine! Cheers to this!

  7. Belong:  Some have a faith, but not all - and all have some sense of belonging, an in-person social network, friend group and/or a true sense of being valued in a community.  Loneliness is contagious, but so is happiness! Your social circle affects your healthy habits and happiness.

  8. Value Family: Family (partners and immediate family) comes first and all help take care of one another.

I really loved this series and found it hopeful and insightful. It made me really wish my hometown would dive in head first and become one of the communities that create their own ‘blue zone’.
